Than you sir have not used a Proto commando GK.0
The Proto gallente commando is actually one of the best, if you rep tank it with one armour plates you have a pretty solid suit regardless of weapon choices, I'd say use a RR and an AR if you're not a fan of AR & SG

EDIT: you may also need a lesson in tactics, but judging by the other posts and how they recount your success, you don't need some better tactics...you may very well just be trying to get the commando buffed unnecessarily.... It's not a buff to the suit (unless it was a speed buff). The problem is that the damage bonus only applies to weapons that don't fit well in a slow, squishy heavy. I know it would be crazy to ask for the Galmando to be the fastest, since across all roles that's the Minmatar main thing. But sure thing you don't need to run fast to be effective with a CR, MD, or SL, whereas you would be awesome being fast with CQC weapons. But I'm not asking for that. Let's just say it's an uncomfortable situation to be a Gallentean commando, unless you use other weapons, which denies the racial bonus. Edit: And yes i've used a proto commando gk.0 and lose it continuously. And for some superstrange reason i even do better with the G/1, lol. Haha fair enough, personally, I see the commandos only fit there stereotypical race roles and not much else.
Ie. Calmando - long range destruction, favors open maps Amarr - Mid to long range awesomness, favors more open maps, but useable in more urban areas Minmatar - mid to close range fighter, Favors a nice mix of open and urban combat Galmando - CQC brawler, favors urban combat with lots of cover
Perhaps you are simply trying to bend the Galmando to fit other situations, while it is possible to do this, it is much easier to use the appropriate commando. Personally I'd suggest using the Galmando only when your environment favors it, unless you have a squad wich can supplement the shortcomings of the Galmando.
Ps. I always lose a ck.0 commando, and I do better in a basic Commando variant then it's Proto counterpart :p
EDIT: let's try buffing the AR before we buff the suit, seeing as most of the issue is with the weapon :p
